Description

Religious Information and History of Gangotri Temple
Among the Char Dham religious circuit is Gangotri which is situated in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand state. One of the four important and pious religious sites of Chota Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand is Gangotri dham. The most and longest pious river in the world is River Ganges. The beginning point of River Ganga here the Goddess Ganga worshipped by the devotees is Gangotri. Its intimate connection with Ganges River is amid all the grace and natural beauty which the mountains and altitude of the place affords what makes Gangotri one of the holiest places. After he had slain the demons on earth legend says that "Submerged Shivlingam" who was teh King Sagar was organizing an Ashwamedha Yagna to proclaim his supremacy. King Sagar would be able to defeat him and strip him of his celestial throne when Indra feared that if the “Yagna” was successful and the horse which was to be accompanied by his 60,000 sons born to Queen Sumati and one son to Asamanjas born of the second queen Kesani however was stolen by Indra. Said that Goddess Ganga came to earth in order to wash away the sins of ancestor of King Bhagirathi is Gangotri. River Ganga has always been a sacred source of purity for the mankind from the folds of mythology till at that time.

Not only a pilgrimage duty but a spiritual calling too is coming towards Gangotri for a pilgrimage tour. Legends say that King Sagara who was the great grandfather of King Bhagirath slayed the demons on earth and he decided to stage an Ashwamedha Yagna in order to proclaim his supremacy. Across emprises a horse was supposed to be let loose to go on an uninterrupted journey during the yagna. They came across the spot where Sage Kapila was meditating while the sons of king were on a hurt for the lost horse. He took away the horse and privately tied it in the ashram of Sage Kapila who was seated in deep meditation when using his celestial powers. God Shiva caught Ganga River in his locks to save the planet earth from such demolition. God Shiva being pleased released Ganga River in the form of three streams one of that came on earth and came to be known as the River Bhagirathi on seeing immense devotion of Bhagirath.
